Bespoke Business Software
| What is Bespoke Software? |
Bespoke software is software written especially for you. It works
exactly the way YOU want it to and you don't have to pay for features
you don't need.
|
|
|
| Isn't it expensive? |
|
You might think bespoke software would be more expensive than an
'off the shelf' package. This is not necessarily the case. Even
if an 'off the shelf' package is available, it may not work the
way YOU work. With a bespoke solution, you get what you ask for
and you don't pay for things you don't want.
Generalised software often has many options that you will never
use, but they often serve to make the system more complex than it
really needs to be. If you add the time you spend learning and adapting
an 'off-the-shelf' package, you will often find you could have got
what you really want more cost effectively by having it written
for you.
|
|
|
| But we don't know enough about
computers. Where would we start? |
You may not be experts in IT or the Internet, but you probably know
your own business better than anyone. We have worked with many small
and very small businesses as well as a few larger ones. We are able
to discuss your real requirements in a language you understand. We
can work with you to put together a highly cost effective solution
which may involve off-the-shelf products, where available and appropriate,
and custom software to meet your unique requirements.
|
|
|
| But we ARE happy with some
of our software. |
We won't advocate re-writing software needlessly. Computerisation
is usually about improving profitability or customer service. Throwing
out systems that are doing their job and forcing staff to learn new
ways of working unnecessarily, is not a good way to start.
We always try to work with what you have. We have considerable experience
of integrating custom software with standard packages, including accountancy
software from Sage, TAS and others or word processing and general
office software from Microsoft and Corel WordPerfect.

|
|
| Will bespoke software from
Peveril will compatible with systems from other suppliers? |
|
Yes. We use a wide range of industry-standard tools and databases.
With the tools available today, data incompatibility should never
be an issue.
If you have existing databases, we should be able to use the same
data and avoid duplicating effort. If your software uses industry-standard
formats, such as Btrieve, Clipper, dBase, FoxPro or SQL databases,
we can often use the data directly. If you no longer require the
old software, we can convert the data to a more robust format.
For new systems that we develop, we tend to use the Topspeed or
Microsoft Database Engines. For larger systems, we recommend Microsoft
SQL Server, but we can work with practically any SQL database.
If you need to use data from one of our systems with software from
a another supplier, we can provide ODBC drivers, custom DDE or OLE
links or specific export routines.

|
|
| What programming language does
Peveril use? |
|
With modern software designed for Microsoft Windows, the language
used is practically irrelevant from the user's point of view as
programs written in different languages can talk to each other and
interact seemlessly. We have experience in a number of different
languages which means that we can choose the most suitable language
for any project.
For bespoke work, we use mainly Clarion and sometimes Visual Basic,
though some small parts of our systems are written in C++ or Delphi.
For Internet work, we also use JavaScript, PERL and PHP.
We also have experience in BASIC, C, COBOL, dBase, Clipper and FoxPro.
While we would not normally write new software in these languages,
the skills can prove useful when maintaining or upgrading older
'legacy' systems.
